Opioid safety recommendations in adult palliative medicine: a North American Delphi expert consensus

  Posted On:  Aug 25th, 2021

Congratulations to Jenny Lau and team for their recent publication in the BMJ Supportive and Palliative Care on Opioid safety recommendations in adult palliative medicine: a North American Delphi expert consensus.

Despite the escalating opioid crisis, opioids are essential for palliative care symptom management. Urgent guidance about opioid safety is required in palliative care. Through a Delphi study, experts in palliative care, addiction and pain medicine collaborated to develop 130 expert consensus recommendations to promote opioid safety in adults receiving palliative medicine. From these results, the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians identified 43 high-priority recommendations and 8 high-priority research topics. These recommendations provide guidance in an area of ambiguity and inform clinical practice and future research to generate further evidence.
